أولا تقنيات الوسط الحمضي

بعد تعريض المواد القائمة على الثوريوم للإشعاع لمدة شهر واحد، تُزال الأسطوانات، وتُذاب في حمض النيتريك . ويمر الراسب الناتج بثلاث مراحل من التنقية. يُفصل البروتاكتينيوم أثناء المرحلة الثانية، عن طريق ترسيب مصحوب بثاني أكسيد المنجنيز ، الذي يُفصل لاحقًا في المرحلة الثالثة باستخدام حمض الأيودين، ويحترق لينتُج أكسيد البروتاكتينيوم الذي يحتوي على البروتاكتينيوم 233 فقط. وتتحلل أي بقايا من البروتاكتينيوم 232 (فترة منتصف عمره 1.3 يوم) والبروتاكتينيوم 234 (فترة منتصف عمره 6.7 ساعات) ـ المتكونة من خلال التفاعلات المتنافسة ـ إلى اليورانيوم 232، واليورانيوم 234 ، وتُزال أثناء مرحلة الإذابة. وتُترك لتتحلل؛ ليتحول البروتاكتينيوم 233 إلى يورانيوم 233 عالي النقاء (أكثر من 99 %).
تستخدم أكثر تقنيات الوسط الحمضي السائل انتشارًا ثاني أكسيد المنجنيز لترسيب البروتاكتينيوم في صورة أكسيد البروتاكتينيوم. وتتم إذابة أي منتج من منتجات اليورانيوم السام إشعاعيًّا في حمض، ويُزال أثناء الترسيب. وكان باحثو معمل أوك ريدج الوطني بتينيسي يستخدمون تلك الطريقة في الستينات من القرن العشرين؛ لاستخلاص جرام واحد من البروتاكتينيوم 233 من 200 جرام من مركبات الثوريوم المعرضة للإشعاع.

 ثانيا الاستخلاص الاختزالي للبيزموث السائل

يمر الفلورين فوق الوقود الملحي المنصهر المُعرض للإشعاع؛ ليتحول ما يقرب من 99 % من اليورانيوم إلى 
UF_6
 الذي يمكن إزالته. ويوضع البروتاكتينيوم المتبقي ونواتج الانشطار واليورانيوم غير المتفاعل بعمود يحتوي على بيزموث سائل وليثيوم وثوريوم. وتُحفظ نواتج الانشطار في الملح، ويُستخرج البروتاكتينيوم واليورانيوم من البيزموث السائل. ويزال اليورانيوم المتبقي ـ بما في ذلك اليورانيوم 232، واليورانيوم 234، وكذلك النظائر الأخرى ـ بالمزيد من الفلورة  للبيزموث. أما البروتاكتينيوم 233 المتبقي، فيكون عالي النقاء، ويتحلل إلى يورانيوم 233.
